Initial Briefing: The Ukrainian Crisis on the Schedule at a Precarious Juncture

Good morning to coverage of a critical day of meetings between European world leaders and US delegates.

The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Denmark and Canada are all present in the City of Light today for a gathering planned to support the Ukrainian nation.

This comes after Kyiv's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy's recent ceasefire talks with the American leader, President Trump.

Yet, these arrangements were made prior to the United States' recent attack on the South American nation and the seizure of its leader, which has dramatically altered the geopolitical equation.

"Not only encouraged moves from nations like the Russian Federation, the leaders of the North Atlantic Alliance member states are now grappling with the US President's very explicit warning of grabbing land like Denmark's Arctic territory," analysts note.

In spite of the America's clear violation of the rules-based order, most EU leaders have also refrained from full condemnation due to the significant stakes at play.

They find themselves in a dangerous predicament regarding the Ukrainian conflict. In engaging with the US delegation today, they were aiming to get the US government to underwrite security guarantees. But the President is flouting the rules-based order – and the threat from the United States is now more direct for nations like Denmark and Canada.

Key Attendees and Timeline

The Ukrainian president, President Zelensky, is attending the "partner coalition" meeting today in Paris, hosted by the leader of France, President Macron, and the British PM, PM Starmer.

The Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, arrived earlier this morning for bilateral talks with Macron. The leader of Germany, Chancellor Merz, and the Prime Minister of Denmark, PM Frederiksen, will also be in attendance.

The Ukrainian leader is expected to arrive around 11.10am for a session with Macron, before meeting the American representatives, which features the special envoy Envoy Witkoff, and the President's son-in-law, Kushner.

On the previous day, the President had spoken to his countrymen, stating that "discussions in Europe … must become an additional step to our defence and to hastening the conclusion of the conflict."

He continued, "Our nation will be prepared for both potential paths ahead – negotiations, which we are pursuing, or ongoing military resistance if the influence from our partners on Russia proves insufficient. Ukraine seek peace."

The main meeting will begin just after 14:00, with a media briefing anticipated around 17:45.

Main Agenda Items

  • Details of long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
  • The prospect of future Ukrainian membership the European Union.
  • Reactions to latest US aggression in Venezuela.
  • Discussing expansionist statements made by the American administration.

Strong Statement on Greenland

In a related matter, the Danish prime minister has stated that an attack by the United States on a treaty partner would mean the collapse of both the military alliance and the post-Second World War international system.

This comment comes after the US President renewed his suggestion to take over the Danish autonomous territory.

Fresh from the military operation in Caracas, the US president said the US needed the island "desperately" – stoking fears of a potential US invasion.

The Danish PM warned that any American military action on a alliance member would be the termination of "everything."

"If the US decides to use force against another alliance partner, then all cooperation would cease – that includes Nato and therefore the existing security," Frederiksen told Danish media.

Greenland's defense and diplomatic affairs continue to be managed by the Danish government.

The day's high-stakes meetings in Paris are therefore set against a backdrop of exceptional geopolitical tension and challenges to the traditional world order.
